'A Land as God made it" presents a much different view of the starting of America. The events predate the Plymouth Landing by many years. The title is somewhat of a misnomer in that the land was not wild and empty, but loaded with many independent and not always friendly 'indians'. The amazing thing is that the settlement persisted in light of famine, unfriendly neighbors, lazy fortune seekers, and an infighting local governing council. This council and the iterations that it went through are a beginning to a freely chosen independent govering body. The stories that have persisted are seen in the light of the excellent and detailed research unearthed by the author. This reviewer's feeling is that these adventurers are more in keeping with America as an economic entity than the religious freedom seekers of Plymouth. This is the beginning of the waves coming to America as a land of oppurtunity. An eye opening read.
