Cliff & Amanda
Since I did not read the stories in order, I had seen glimpses of Amanda and Cliff in other de Warenne stories. Cliff should have had his story and now he does. He is a gentleman born and bred, but as a third son will not inherit a title or lands. He leaves at an early age to make his own claim in life. By the time this story occurs he is a pirate hunter and a privateer. The richest of his father's sons by far with a private home on Jamaca. Where he has seen and watched Amanda grow up from afar. Amanda is a pirate's daughter. Her life has been tough and she has done what is necessary to survive on an island alone with no one around for months at a time to feed and protect her. She lives like a savage. Hence her nickname. On a mission to save her father she meets Cliff while throwing herself on the mercy of the island govenor. For whatever he wishes. Cliff saves her virtue and finds she has family in London. Determined to bring her to her family to begin life as a Lady, rather than leave her to the island, they set off. On the sail, he is determined to refine her abilities in order that she may be accepted by London society and her noble mother. Finding out who the real mother is - Cliff's hopes may be dashed. Amanda learns how to read and act like a lady enough to at least move in London before disembarking. However, not before Cliff wants her. She loves him too. When in London, he learns her mother wants nothing to do with her, he forms the plan to be her guardian and present her himself. He even sets up a dowry for her. While rejecting every suitor. He thinks it is saving her, but it is because he loves her. She wants to be with him, she is so in love. But, she is bent on doing what is right due to his generosity. They are so similar and have so much in common as brought out in the book. Her mother schemes and is nasty, as are others. Still, she prevails to a point. On a final day, she can take no more. She cannot love another nor marry anyone and sets out to flee back to Jamaca. She steals Cliff's ship on the day he is going to propose to her. You will have to read to find out what happens on the sea 10 days later...
