U.S. Secret Service Agent Harrison Raines poses as a scout for Union forces advancing in Virginia, but his real mission is to protect Colonel Baker, President Lincoln's closest friend. The Colonel resents Raines and puts himself in the line of Confederate fire. Following the killer behind enemy lines, Raines is captured, but he soon learns from other Union prisoners that the Federals think "he" murdered Baker.
