The reference is undoubtedly to Bangor on the Dee, where a monastery had been established in the middle of the sixth century by Deiniol or Daniel, the founder of the original Bangor on the Menai Straits.40 It seems likely that the conference was held not far off, and the "Sinodus urbis legion" assigned by Harleian MS. 3859 to the year 60160 may well refer to some clerical assembly got together at Chester in connection with these negotiations. It would be of the utmost interest to know who were the leading figures on the British side, but the attempt even to fix the sees of the seven bishops who met Augustine is a hopeless one,51 and all that is certainly known is that the conferences were a failure.
