All that is certain as to date is that in the year B.c. 4o9 there were still a considerable number of details incomplete in the new Erechtheum, including the frieze or part of it.1 The architecture of the temple is of the Ionic order, and full of difficult problems arising from the complicated formation of the acropolis at this point, and the manner in which this formation was taken advantage of by the architect or architects.2 1 A Greek inscription, now in in Athen, ii. p. 15; and lastly the British Museum, dated B.c.
