The writing by Charles Johnston is engaging, and the illustrations, many of them archtectural images, are beautifully chosen to give a real sense of Haydn's surroundings. As with any artificially generated compilation, the musical contents are something of a mixed bag, but this two-disc set has the virtue of being state-of-the-art: many of the individual recordings had not yet been released when this album appeared.
