In the 3000 years since King David laid claim to Jerusalem, Jews, Romans, Christians, Persians and Turks have raised their standard above the city's walls. But it was only in 1994, following the historic peace accord between PLO leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli prime minister Yitzhak Rabin, that the Palestinian flag had been seen there. It was greeted with horror by Israelis who, after nearly 2000 years in exile, regard the city as the eternal and indivisible capital of the Jewish people. The author of this text seeks to get to the heart of the Jerusalem dispute through the people who inhabit the city. Their personal stories reveal much about the real Jerusalem which is often overlooked in the documents produced by diplomats and constitutional experts.

This is essential reading for anyone interested in the on-going Palestinian-Israeli conflict. It is short, readable, and not emotionally biased towards either side in the battle. Since reading it, I have resolved to read my history in future from books written by journalists, which Couglin is; historians simply don't know when to stop ! Although written in the Nineties, very little has changed. Over the years since I first read it (in Ramallah) I must have given away a dozen copies to individuals who expressed an interest in gaining a balanced perspective on the situation.
