Charles Burney (1726-1814), was the foremost music historian of his day. The General History, his most famous work, was published in four volumes between 1776 and 1789 and is still of great value today. Burney wanted to write something which would appeal to and inform the musician and the general reader. Research for the History was undertaken during two European tours, in 1770 and 1772, consulting original sources and meeting the great musicians of the time. The resultant work is engaging and elegantly written, offering the reader a fascinating view not only of Burney's own musical preferences and enthusiasms, but also a reflection of contemporary fashionable taste. All four volumes contain generous musical examples, quotations from original sources and an index. The third volume, published 1789, considers European music to the end of the seventeenth century and English church music from the death of Purcell to Burney's time.

Useful book, if it is the Dover reprint, then volume I goes to 1549 or the invention of printing for music, then Dover volume 2 goes up to 1789, when Burney published. If is Burney's original 1789 edition, it is in 4 volumes.
817 pages in vol I and 1024 in vol II, thousands of printed music score. Burney gives examples of original text he quotes, when the translation is not exact. From, 350AD on it is mostly Church music with some later secular music. Burney was comtempory with many of the composers that we consider "classical" and he corresponded with them and visited a few.
Burney is a music critic, music historian and music translator. Many of the early music score are in other music notation than used at the present and have to be translated to something readable. Burney did a fairly good job.
Also, of interest is trying to correctly name early music instruments and match a name with the instrument, Burney deals with this as well.
Thise two volumes are useful the the music historian and to anyone wanting to develope a collection of early music.
But make sure the seller tells you what volumes you are getting.
