Whether, and in what degree, the present Work has attained the end desired, I am not qualified to form an opinion; I beg merely to offer this assurance to the reader, that I have steadfastly and carefully kept in view the progressive development of Art, and instead of crowding the pages of this little book with bio graphical anecdotes cheaply collected, or names and titles of books, have strictly excluded every thing superfluous.
