Although Bud Shank and Bob Cooper played together many times through the years, they are heard on this CD on five separate selections apiece and never do meet up. In both cases, they are accompanied by the large Netherlands Metropole Orchestra. The recording dates have unfortunately been left off, but the music probably dates from the late 1980s. Shank is not only heard on alto, but switches to flute on two of the five numbers (he eventually gave up that instrument altogether). Shank sounds fine during his half (particularly during an inventive "Like Someone In Love" and the pretty "Never Never Land"), but Cooper generally steals the show. His rendition of "Speak Low" tops Shank's, and he is showcased throughout the second part of the CD in prime form. It was such a major loss when Bob Cooper (underrated through the years due to his decision to live in Los Angeles) passed away in 1993. He plays with plenty of exuberance during his features (check out his double-timing on "Stella By Starlight"), and his solos alone would make this CD highly recommended. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
