The spirit of a family man killed in a tragic road accident enters the body of the fleeing fugitive who caused it, allowing the loving husband and father one final chance to give his family the closure they so desperately need. Nick Stern had just building a fishing cabin on Loon Lake when wanted man Eddie Wilkins appears into the middle of the road, causing a deadly accident. As local sheriff Hal Payton pursues Wilkins, Stern perishes in the wreckage of his overturned truck. Three months later, when Stern's family travels to the cabin for the very first time, the father's soul still linkers, unable to cross over due to the grief his death has caused. Meanwhile Wilkins is still on the run, and crashes a speedboat in a particularly treacherous area of the lake while evading the persistent Sheriff Payton. In that moment, as Wilkins hovers between life and death, he allows Stern to enter his body in exchange for saving his soul. Over the course of the next few days, Stern's wife and children form a close bond with the stranger, never realizing that he is their father in disguise. With Sheriff Payton still in hot pursuit, however, the loving father must use the little time he has left to teach his family that the only way for them to be truly free is to accept their tragic loss while never forgetting the love that he showed them in life.
