Excerpt from A Few Suggestions Upon the Personal Liberty Law and Secession (So Called): In a Letter to a Friend With these feelings and convictions in relation to the Fugitive-slave Law of 1850, I have, nevertheless, always been of the opinion, that every attempt to soften the rigor of the law, to supply its defects, to relieve its injustice, or to obstruct its operation, by State legis lation, would be utterly vain and futile.
