Publisher's original green gilt cloth boards, with publisher's embossed stamp to upper and lower boards, Ex-library, with embossed stamp to front cover and two small stamps internally: one blind stamp to rear of frontispiece, and one 'Withdrawn' stamp and sticker to rear paste-down. Wear to spine ends, small 2 cm split to rear spine, else a very good copy indeed, with few internal signs of wear or usage. Internally extremely good-unmarked, unfoxed, and quite clean. This is the original 1882 First Edition published posthumously by Truebner, London. Krapf served with the Church Missionary Society in East Africa, and is one of the earliest missionary-linguists to have worked on Swahili and incidentally to have endowed Swahili with a Latin alphabet in place of the former Arabic script. This monumental dictionary largely reflects ki-Unguja (Zanzibar) Swahili, the basis of modern Standard Swahili. L14.
