This is historical fiction based on the life of British nurse, Edith Cavell. She worked in Belgium and founded a nursing school there. She did much to elevate the standard of the nursing profession, so people would be more likely to encourage their daughters to become nurses. It recounts her early life in England as the daughter of a vicar. During WW1, she helped Allied soldiers hide in her hospital and escape out of occupied Belgium. She was arrested, imprisoned and tried. She was convicted and executed by firing squad in 1915. I was very impressed with this woman, who, like Florence Nightingale, has done much for the nursing profession. There is a statue of her in front of the University of Toronto nursing school. This book seems to be aimed at a younger female audience, but I found it to be an enjoyable read.
