Not illustrated. 1718 Excerpt: ...that he might, without any Prejudice to his Justice, Truth or Holiness, justifie and save us on our Faith and sincere Obedience. The Duties required of us in answer to the Satisfaction which Christ hath made for our Sins, are these two. First, If Christ hath satisfied for our Sins, then we should forsake them and practise Holiness. The End for which Christ gave himself for us was to redeem us from all iniquity, and to make us zealous of good works, Tit. ii. 14. And unless we repent of our Sins, and live unto Christ, we are not capable of enjoying the Benefits which he hath purchased. For Christ hath not so procured Salvation for us, that we need not labour to obtain it: but we our selves must work out our own Salvation. For Christ came not to free us from Duty, but to oblige us the more to perform it. And he bore our fins (that is, the Punishment due to our Sins) in his own body on the tree, that we being dead to fin, stouldlive unto righteousness, 1 Pet. ii. 24. And unless we amend our ways, and obey Christ, we are likely to receive no Benefit from him. Secondly, If Christ hath satisfied for our Sins, then we should rely on his Merits for Pardon of Sins and Salvation, when we are obedient to his Laws. There is none absolutely excluded from God's Mercy in Christ: But whofoever believeth in Christ stall receive remission of fins through his name, Act. x. 43. For pardon of Sins and Salvation, which Christ hath purchased, are offered unto / unto all on condition of Faith and Holiness. And seeing Christ came to save all without exception, who believe in him, and obey him, then we have firm ground to rely on his Merits for Salvation, when we are become new Creatures.
