Their doings will not suffer them1 to turn unto their God: for the spirit of whoredom is within2 them, and they know not the Lord. 5. And the pride3 of Israel doth testify4 to his face: therefore Israel and Ephraim shall stumble in their iniquity; Judah also shall stumble with them. 6. they shall go with their flocks and with their herds to seek the Lord; But they shall not find him; he hath withdrawn himself from them. 7. They have dealt treacherously against the Lord: for they have borne6 strange children: Now shall the new moon6 devour them with their fields.7 1 m. they will not frame their doings. - m. in the midst of. 8 m. the excellency. The spirit of whoredom is here apparently the spirit of devotion to other gods. Hence it is impossible that they should properly know the Lord. 5. The pride of Israel is probably Israel's arrogant confidence in the all-sufficiency of its ritualistic worship of Jehovah. Doth testify; better will testify, i.e. will prove its falsity and emptiness in the coming time of trial.
