It helps to have read Alice Hadfield's book on Williams because the novels are a demonstration of his ideas. They are unlike any novels I've ever read. The reader doesn't get involved with the personalities of the characters so much as with what they say and do. He makes you care about their choices as he shows you how their choices affect their lives. Utterly fascinating.
