Eager, proud, annoyed, mis erable: many qualities of facial expression were there; and all slightly sharpened by resentment. No one would have minded meeting, alone, the rich hostess who had not yet appeared; but this unex plained crowd, like a prayer-meeting or a table d'hote, was maddening.
