The Diocese of New York, under the new Bishop, Henry C. Potter, decided to try an experiment by the establishment of Archdeacons, and it was proposed that I should be the first Archdeacon of New York City. After due consideration, I accepted the position, and with the help of the Bishop, I organized the office which made me the Rector of one Parish, the head of the Episcopal City Mission Society with some eighteen Chaplains, and also gave me the general supervision of the religious work among the countless institutions which filled the islands, of the East River with their works of love and DEGREES mercy. It was one of my duties to meet the Clergy who took part in this work every Monday morning for a service and for consultation on various problems which arose. My afternoons were largely spent in visiting the public institutions and attending to cases of peculiar distress. The services at the various city prisons came under my supervision as well as those of the great asylums and hospitals. There must have been more than ten thosand inmates in these "Homes." Other Christian Churches worked in these places, as well as we, but owing to the fact that we had some reputation as an "Institutional Church," and were organized in various directions, as well as to the warm terms of friendship, in which different Christian bodies worked with us, and we with them, we never encountered any difficulties which were not easily disposed of, and never with the slightest friction.
