The first of five volumes of Razor & Tie's 60 Number One Hits of the '60s appropriately contains 12 tracks, or one-fifth of the total. The first of five volumes of Razor & Tie's 60 Number One Hits of the '60s appropriately contains 12 tracks, or one-fifth of the total. All the selections are indeed number one hits -- one from 1961, three from 1963, one from 1964, four from 1966, one from 1967, one from 1968, and one from 1969, apparently chosen at random and sequenced the same way. Popular music changed a great deal during the decade, and the innocent teen anthems "It's My Party," "Leader of the Pack," and "My Boyfriend's Back" rub shoulders uncomfortably with late-'60s entries like the psychedelic "Incense & Peppermints" and the apocalyptic "In the Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)." Clearly, none of that matters to the compilers, however, which makes this album, and the entire five-disc series, work equally well in any other order than the one presented. Get yourself a five-CD changer, put them in, and hit "random sort." The '60s won't be jumbled up any worse than they would have been if you'd just pressed "play." ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
