But beyond being the brunt of many jokes, the man knew what America wanted. On this collection of big-band favorites, Welk and company come up with a thoroughly entertaining collection. Whether performing their renditions of Count Basie's "One O'Clock Jump," Duke Ellington's "Take the 'A' Train," or other classics of the era, the playing is impressive. Especially effective are the brass and piano solos (though unfortunately there are no liner notes to say who played what). Rhythmically the playing might be toned down a bit, and the vocals might be stylized. Still, there is a spirit beyond mere professionalism that can't be denied.
