18 Holes of Golf tells the story of The Large Hadron Collider, the world's largest and highest-energy microscope, along with all the other amazing high-tech goodies that enhance our lives today. This epic tale begins with early scientist's 2,800 years ago in ancient Greece, and tells how our knowledge of the world around us has been built up by way of Aristotle, Galileo, Newton, Einstein and many others. The story's told in a series of chat's between two senior citizens, Bob and Alec, while they are playing a golf match and, altho' neither is a scientist, they combine the knowledge they've gained during their working lives to give a simple explanation of how everything in our Universe fits together. Their friendly, sometimes humourous, conversations are in normal everyday language so there's no technical jargon for the reader to puzzle over. The book isn't limited to golf and science. It's also a story that shows the true value of friendship on and off the course and, as the golfer's stories evolve, it highlights the importance of having a life filled with love, caring and laughter. The story starts with a chance meeting in the Clubhouse between Alec and one of his professors when he he was a maths student at university. This meeting is the basis for their 'between shot' chats as they describe how our amazing Universe has evolved over billions of years. The tale includes the boy's wives, Brenda and Alice, and two friends, Frank and Jean. Frank starts the main story by introducing Alec to the professor and it ends with Jean, a dedicated thespian, being honoured on her retirement after 'fifty years of fun with The Players', an amateur dramatic society. As to the golf match, Bob finds out on the last green that actions in the quantum, or sub-atomic, world can even influence the final result. 'As a lover of history and a science enthusiast, tho' not a golfer, this was a delightful read. The book will be educational for people who want an easy introduction to the growth of science and the many impacts it has had on our modern world. -- reviewed in Online Book Club - February 2022
