Raven's two-fer of the Sir Douglas Quintet's 1+1+1=4 and The Return of Doug Saldaņa, released in 1970 and 1971 respectively, appeared roughly around the same time Audium reissued the two albums separately with bonus tracks, but it's tough to complain about a sudden surplus of their Smash material when it was so very hard to find on CD for many years. Though one other album for Smash followed -- 1973's Rough Edges, consisting mainly of earlier sessions, three tracks of which are added as bonus tracks here (along with "Michoacan" from the soundtrack of the 1972 film Cisco Pike) -- these two records effectively capped off their stunning string of LPs for the label and compliment each other very well. 1+1+1 is a little sunnier and a little more open, Return is a grittier roadhouse record, but both are wonderful examples of Doug Sahm's freewheeling, all-encompassing roots music, filled with great songs and great performances that sound effortless and timeless. As to whether you should get the individual reissues or this two-fer, it's really a toss-up since the bonus tracks on those aren't available here and vice versa -- pick whichever is either cheaper or easier to find, just as long as you get this music in some form. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi
