Publisher's oversized grey cloth, no dust jacket as issued. Illustrated with 226 photographs taken during the decade Weiwei lived in New York City, 1983-1993. All text bilingual in English and Chinese. Dampstaining to covers and some extreme margins, not affecting the images. No markings. Not to be confused with the later paperback edition published in Europe, this true first edition was published in Beijing just 8 months before Weiwei was arrested at Beijing airport for "economic crimes". He was detained for 81 days without charge and eventually moved abroad to Europe when allowed to leave China in 2015. A fascinating collection of the artist's photographs of his life and work in New York during this vibrant period. Scarce in the original first edition.
