Perhaps not quite the blockbuster tell-all it was probably advertised to be: the bulk of the passages are mildly propagandistic, extolling the valor of the British troops and their suffering (details of which WERE censored during the conflict). The real insights are hidden in pages of text; for example one bitter officer blamed the phenomenal wastefulness of casualties on a sclerotic clique of senior officers in the British army---the same boneheaded bunglers who muddled through the Boer War, learning nothing, and muddled through WW I. I do not think such a command structure is/was confined to Great Britain but this account seems a significant contribution to the history of the British armed forces.
