Elle n'est plus matiere a d'interminables controverses. Elle a fait, au contraire, l'objet d'un investissement considerable de la part de l'Etat, des associations, de l'opinion en general. Le probleme public qui emerge du debut des annees 1990 de maniere conflictuelle, et que nous essayions alors de comprendre, a debouche sur de veritables politiques publiques de memoire, qui ont a leur tour lance d'autres debats. Ces politiques, elles-memes consequence d'une profonde evolution des esprits, ont transfigure la maniere de voir les annees 1940-1944 et sans doute ouvert une nouvelle etape du -syndrome de Vichy-. Notre livre a participe de ces changements. Son titre, repris depuis comme un leitmotiv, est devenu une expression du sens commun. Peut-etre - mais c'est au lecteur d'en juger - notre propos avait-il anticipe les risques d'un usage abusif du -devoir de memoire- dont on a pu observer les manifestations repetees ces dernieres annees, moins a propos de l'heritage de Vichy que des souvenirs conflictuels d'autres episodes traumatiques de l'histoire recente.
