The Barney family in colonial Queensland provided the first engineer for the colony of NSW (George Barney) who retired as Surveyor General in 1860; the first full time Postmaster to Moreton Bay (John Edward Barney) and on his death the appointment of his widow Elise Barney to the position of Postmistress. The Barneys were in charge of the postal service in Brisbane Town for eleven years from 1852.
