Dulcimer making has long been considered an art. The exquisite design is also functional, and the best instruments sound as beautiful as they look. Homer Ledford, a legend among dulcimer makers, is known for his innovative but traditional craftsmanship. A biography and a step-by-step guide to dulcimer making, this classic book illuminates and celebrates the work of a master craftsman, musician, and folk artist. This new edition presents a foreword by Ron Pen, director of the John Jacob Niles Center for American Music at the University of Kentucky, and an enlightening afterword featuring a conversation with Ledford. See Amazon for in depth reviews.
If you can find the hard cover edition get it because the photographs are much better than in my soft cover. I have both and a Homer Ledford dulcimer too.

DULCIMERS
This is a lovely book which I am proud to own. I find it thoroughly annoying that books about men with manual skills are so frequently the preserve of American authors, writing about fellow Americans. That the man and his abilities are worthy of a book is beyond doubt. I just wish one of our British accademics would write about an English artisan with such warmth and admiration.
The book itself is simple but beautifully informative. I have long admired the people who made instruments like these, often with no formal training at all. It would seem that America has become the keeper of the flame as far as these types of skills are concerned.
Not much of a review of the book, I know, but I'm just thrilled that it has been written.
