The North American cruise industry is the largest sector of the trade by a long way. Of the 2007 cruise market, which totalled over 16 million, US cruise vacationers alone represented over 70 per cent of the total. With stunning photographs, many of which are in colour, this general history looks at the companies and ships that are dedicated to this particular market. From the big players, the luxury market and niche cruising, to disasters and predictions, this illustrated book covers the whole industry, past, present and future. Authors, Roger Cartwright and Peter Rushton, consider why the taking of an ocean voyage for the pleasure of the journey itself, and not simply as a means of travelling from A to B, came to be so popular, and what the arrival of the mega-ships means for the new age in cruising, providing the perfect guide to cruising and its history across America.

This British book purporting to deliver a history of the US cruise industry is a mess. I had previously read and enjoyed Cartwright's Cruise Britannia. He is definitely more knowledgeable about the UK's cruise business than he is about the US market.
His chapter 7, called The Big Players may be the book's low point. He refers to defunct Regency Cruises, Admiral Cruises Royal Viking and Commodore as the "big players" in the history of US Cruising. Royal Viking was a most wonderful cruise line devoted to longer luxury cruises on three relatively small ships. It was a high end niche player, my favorite for sure, but not a big player. Regency was a low end budget operation with third hand ships at best, some of which could not pass US health inspection and therefore could only sail from foreign ports. Admiral and Commodore were just a step higher with second and third hand ships and budget prices.
I saw no mention of Home Lines, Grace Lines, Swedish America Line, Incres, Matson and almost no mention of the post war pre 1970s cruise sailings by the primarily transAtlantic companies especially Holland America, Norwegian America, Italian Lines, US Lines, American Export etc. Princess and Sitmar, Holland America and Cunard's pre Carnivalization days were hardly mentioned. The port of New York's importance pre 1970's and it's reemergence are basically ignored.
About a third of the photos are not of the US based cruises ships in their glory days but of their diminished afterlives in other markets. These photos would be more appropriate to a "where are they now" type of book.
The book is a huge disappointment . the author should stick to subjects he knows about
