Martin Marty provides a compact introduction to the life and thought of Martin Luther. He presents Luther's life chronologically in four chapters of roughly equal length. This makes the first chapter, which covers the greatest span of years, a little dense for the reader new to the history of the 1500s. The sections on Luther's thought are quite good, although some longer quotations from Luther himself would have helped impart more of the flavor of the man and his profound eloquence of thought. Our parish is using this book as the text for an eight-week introduction to Martin Luther in combination with the recent movie, "Luther," starring Joseph Fiennes. Together the two works present a pretty well-rounded portrait of a significant man who made his mark at the crossroads of the medieval and modern worlds.
