This survey is concerned with reviewing the events of 1989 relevant to world Jewry. In a year which saw the rapid and dramatic political change in Eastern Europe, much of the survey focusses on Jewish communities in Central and Eastern Europe, in particular examining local cultural revivals, links with world Jewry and uniforming diplomatic ties with Israel. In his introduction the author confronts many of the issues for Jewish communities raised by the prospect of German reunification, and this is put into a historical context by Geoffrey Wigoder's account of the controversy over the Carmelite Convent in Auschwitz. In its regular sections on the USA, Israel and the Middle East, the survey adresses Israel's delicate diplomatic relations with Washington, and the opening of a US-PLO dialogue. The obstacles to peace in the Middle East emerge clearly from the articles in this volume.
