Hello,
I am the author of the book, Medical Terminology: A Student Workbook
I have been asked to discuss this resource as there has been confusion about how to use it.
Back in 1997 when I started teaching medical terminology I found little in terms of additional study guides for students to practice word-building skills. To me, medical terminology is the language of health care and as a language, one must practice, practice, practice in order to become proficient.
That being said, I put together this workbook. I must stress that it is a WORKBOOK and not a primary textbook for medical terminology. What does that mean? The book is to be used as an adjunct to the course textbook. It is filled with practice pages, new vocabulary (not found in many textbooks), hints on how to write medical terms, flash cards, multiple choice questions, fill-in-the-blanks, and other types of aids to help the student practice writing medical terms.
Yes, it is instruction vacant because it is not a TEXTBOOK, it is a WORKBOOK. In my classes, I would use the workbook for homework. The units in the workbook correspond to most textbook chapters. So for example, on the textbook chapter for the endocrine system, the student would turn to the workbook section for endocrine where they can complete and practice word-building exercises to help understand the language.
I hope this helps. My students all loved the workbook. It provided them additional practice opportunities and an easier way for me to assign homework that would be graded in class as the first part of class was dedicated to reviewing the homework (in the workbook). Each student would switch their workbook with the student next to them and grade the unit. At the midterm and final sections of the class, I would collect the workbooks and grade them based on criteria I established:
1. That the student completed the assignments.
2. That the students went back and corrected those they got wrong.
3. That the student showed improvement.

Thank you.
