Terry and Monica Darlington are intrepid pensioners who made the surprising decision to sail their canal narrowboat Phillis May, sixteen hundred miles across France and down to the Mediterranean, accompanied only by their whippet Jim. They took advise from nautical experts, who told them they would lose their boat and their lives (and, indeed, their whippet Jim). Narrow Dog to Carcassonne is a true story of high adventure in France, England, Belgium and out at sea, as experienced by two innocents and a reluctant dog. On board the Phillis May you share in a very different way of life. You go rabbiting in Oxfordshire, tie up among the bankers in the City of London, live among history in Flanders, drift through Champagne, throw a rope around the Eiffel Tower, struggle with hostile life forms in Burgundy, float down the Saone from vineyard to vineyard, get swept along by the terrible Rhone from Lyon to Avignon, dip your toes in the Mediterranean, and sail across inland seas among the flamingos of the Camargue. Breakdowns, floods, accidents, hangovers, vandals, dicks, trolls, aliens, gongoozlers, killer fish and the walking dead stand between our intrepid crew and their goal - many-towered Carcassonne.

A retired couple and their whippet Jim pack up their narrowboat in Wales, head down to London, across the English Channel, through Belgium and France to the Mediterranean (just a bit) and Carcassonne, a route that no narrowboat was ever intended to take, and probably none other ever has or will. It is more than just an interesting travelogue; there is some interesting creative writing and a smattering of poetry. I don't think I would care to make the trip, but I'm glad to have gone along by way of the book. Some knowledge of British canals and narrowboats (now easily obtained by way of YouTube) adds to the experience.

Not for everyone!
Having read this book and thoroughly enjoyed it I felt sure my brother in France would like it just as much, especially as he is coming to the UK for a canal holiday in June so I sent him a copy. I was wrong! Terry Darlington's sense of humour did not appeal to him. It just goes to show you can't please all the people all of the time!
Meanwhile, I am re-reading my copy and enjoying it just as much as I did last time. I can't wait to read Terry's new book that is due out any time now.
