Launched in 1939, fitted out in 1940 and 1941, she first sailed with the Cruiser Prinz Eugen to raid British convoys. Bismarck was intercepted by HMS Hood and Prince of Wales. The Hood was overage, and not well maintained. Prince of Wales was brand new and still had shipyard workers fitting out the guns. Hood was sunk, Bismarck was hurt and the action broke off.
