The Pendleton stands on the summit of Shadow Hill at the highest point of an old heartland city, a Gilded Age palace built in the late 1800s as a tycoon's dream home. Almost from the beginning, its grandeur has been scarred by episodes of madness, suicide, mass murder, and whispers of things far worse. But since its re-christening in the 1970s as a luxury apartment building, the Pendleton has been at peace. I waited with great anticipation for this to arrive after reading the synopsis. It was a good storyline that just didn't live up to what it should have been. The building itself as a character was good, and the involuntary time travel of unsuspecting residents (past & present) is so rich in promise that what the story delivered was a let down. And it was distracting and a little frustrating to have the scene and characters change so abruptly after every few pages - it was impossible to connect with any individual or moment before it was replaced by a new scene. And while I'm given this moment to rant, why must EVERY character (of 20+?) have some bizarre incomprehensible name? Just a good book, not a great book. Not one I'll be reading a 2nd time.
