Just finished this translation of the German novel Tyll, a fictional account of a smart-ass traveling entertainer set against Europe in the 30 Years War. Interesting read as the narrative shifts in non-linear sequence from the central protagonist Tyll Ulenspiegel, to various figures in the period, notably the Winter King and his wife Elizabeth. Has a lot of charm, and the scenes drawn from the period are credibly frightful. But in the end it's hard to say what it was all about, maybe like the point of the war itself. Generally life-affirming, but is that all?
