This introductory textbook describes modern cosmology at a level suitable for advanced undergraduates who are familiar with mathematical methods and basic theoretical physics. An introductory survey of the large scale structure of the universe is followed by an outline of general relativity. This is then used to construct the standard models of the universe. The very early and early stages of the Big Bang are described, and this includes primordial nucleosynthesis, grand unified theories, primordial black holes, and the era of quantum cosmology. The problem of the formation of structure in the universe is then addressed. This textbook concludes with brief outlines of alternative cosmologies. It includes 400 problems for students to solve, and is accompanied by numerous worked examples.

Mr Narlikar is one of the principals in the science of cosmology. His work is cited in many books including those written for the lay scientist. I found this book to be on the far side of the line separating technical from non-technical. Look for his "Violent Events" for something more easily digested.

All about space
I haven´t finished reading this book, and yet, I think I can say something about it. First of all, this is more like a textbook and often heavy going compared to Narlikar´s earlier book "The structure of the universe" . However, it is an eye-opener for those of us who are interested in cosmology and are sceptical about the Big Bang, unfortunately at the moment the only hypothesis accepted by the majority. Narlikar´s book starts off well, with an overview on the cosmos and the universe and its objects, and also discusses the Theory of Relativity. The interesting aspects are doubts about the red shift and the microwave background that are not adequately explained by the Big Bang.Well worth a read.In my view, an excellent alternative to standard and established opinions.
