Had the publication been delayed until a later period there would-have been a smaller number, or no persons remaining, who lived in, or had any personal knowledge of, the times to which the letters relate. It may be worth while to advert briefly to some principal points in the condition of things in Scotland about the time when these letters commence. Many' persons, now above fifty years afterwards, may not be' aware of the mere facts on some subjects at that time, nor know that important changes have taken place which have now become matters of course, and have ceased to attract any attention, because they have ceased to be a new state of things.
