This book introduces two new submarine heroes, best friends Peter Vornado and Burke Dillinger; both submarine Commanders who had been at Annapolis together and had many adventures. They are both tasked with different aspects of a particular mission. Vornado is undercover in Russia. One hard to believe incident: In the middle of this, Vornado develops an inoperable brain tumour, supposedly comes back from the brink of death with some experimental drug, and then they let him go back to driving a multi-million dollar sub. Not too likely, on both counts. I am an oncology nurse, and usually if someone gets to the point of study drugs, it doesn't look promising. Another thing: Dillinger has a torrid affair with his female first officer, while aboard the sub. Probably why the U.S. is still opposed to female submariners; they assume affairs are inevitable in close quarters. Or that the sailors are fantasizing about it. The most disappointing part of the book is that while he is undercover, posing as a divorced man, Vornado has an affair and convinces himself if was necesssary. The more surprising part comes when you find that the woman was also undercover from the U.S. Navy and it didn't have to happen at all. Otherwise, the plot is excellent, and the submarine tactics are ingenious.
