James M Gavin
Lieutenant General James M. Gavin commanded the 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment in combat from Sicily through Normandy and then succeeded Matthew Ridgeway in Command of the 82nd Airborne Division. After the war he served in a series of high command and staff positions in Europe and the United States. Following his retirement in 1958 he was ambassador to France.
