About the author and the story behind the book: A.S. Mink was born in the Netherlands and raised in rural Ireland in the 1970's. She now lives in a nineteenth-century townhouse in the city centre of Arnhem in the Netherlands. When she first arrived in Arnhem, she became intrigued by its history and the stories of one particular family who lived in Arnhem's most beautiful house during the Nazi occupation in World War II.On the 23rd of September 1944, when the Allies approached Arnhem, all the inhabitants were ordered by the Nazis to evacuate the city and take only the items they could carry. Most were forced to leave their most prized possessions behind. Almost a year later, when they were finally allowed to return, the evacuees discovered that their beautiful homes had turned into mountains of rubble, and the bridge that connected the north and south of the town had been bombed beyond repair. The battle of Arnhem destroyed many ancient buildings in the city and on its outskirts, much to the horror of its inhabitants. Some characters and places in The Bone Sculptor are based on actual people and places, but the events described result from the author's imagination. The Bone Sculptor has been longlisted for Mslexia's Novel Award.
