Alibris Offers PayPal to Book, Music, and Movie Shoppers

Holiday sales at the online book, music, and movie marketplace increase with the addition of PayPal

EMERYVILLE, CA—December 9, 2008—Alibris, the premier independently owned and operated online global marketplace for new, rare, out-of-print, and used books, music items, and movies, announced that it is now accepting PayPal for online payments. With more than 100 million books, CDs, and DVDs, Alibris gives consumers access to an unparalleled selection of items. Now these shoppers have the added flexibility of being able to use PayPal while purchasing items from the marketplace's 12,000 independent sellers around the world.

PayPal provides a safer, easier way to pay online. With PayPal, Alibris customers can now pay for items through account balances, bank accounts, debit cards, or credit cards without sharing their financial information.

After launching PayPal on its retail Web sites, Alibris experienced a strong uptick in sales among new and continuing shoppers who chose to pay with PayPal. Alibris is confident that this change furthers its ongoing efforts to improve its Web sites by adding features that satisfy consumers and increase sales for independent sellers.

"We were very happy to see holiday book buyers react so quickly and favorably to the addition of PayPal to Alibris," said Brian Elliott, President & CEO of Alibris. "Immediately after we launched it, new and returning customers adopted the PayPal payment method in droves, confirming the desire for e-commerce payment alternatives and driving increased sales to our independent sellers."

Elliott further explained that in the weeks since the new payment method was added, more than ten percent of Alibris's book, music, and movie buyers chose PayPal during checkout. "As the holiday shopping season peaks, we begin to see back-to-school shopping ramp up," said Elliott. "We expect the favorable adoption of PayPal by our customers to continue, especially as students—many of whom prefer PayPal as their primary payment method—find new and used textbooks listed at bargain prices by Alibris sellers."

The addition of PayPal to Alibris is the latest in a series of improvements at the independent online marketplace. Preceded by an enhanced page featuring Rare & Collectible books, new multi-ISBN search functionality for textbook shoppers, and a page offering newly released books on sale, paying via PayPal is yet another convenience that book, music, and movie buyers will find at Alibris.
