I went to college at Brigham Young University, got an electrical engineering degree, and went to work for Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. in the Silicon Valley. In 1969, I was offered a job with GTE Sylvania working on the ALTAIR radar project on Roi-Namur Island in the Kwajalein Atoll. Immediately after arriving, I got acquainted with the fishermen on the island as I was a fishing fanatic. While being around the dock area, I got acquainted with several divers who showed me underwater photographs of the shipwrecks in the nearby lagoon along with artifacts that they had recovered. These fascinated me as I had always been interested in ship and WW II history since childhood days; becoming a shipwreck diver was a natural progression." World War II Wrecks of Palau is an oversized volume containing historical documentation of the Japanese occupation of Palau and descriptions of the US aerial campaigns, Operation DESECRATE ONE, the SNAPSHOT Operation, and the preliminary actions of the STALEMATE II Operation against this important WW II Japanese naval base. The story line follows the attacks from the US carrier strike plane launchings to the sinking of ships and the shooting down of aircraft from information derived from ship and aircraft reports, action photos, communication and photo intelligence files, and continues with underwater photo documentation and descriptions of the ship and aircraft wrecks. Further detailed information is included regarding the installations and defenses with illustrations showing their locations. A total of 69 illustrations (diagrams, maps and line drawings), 60 black and white photos, and 36 color plates are included within the book. In addition, there are reference appendices on Japanese ship construction, aerial mine characteristics, aircraft rockets, and Palau s mysterious treasure wreck. This book is an excellent addition to any serious World War II enthusiast s or wreck diver s library and any diver/tourist who has traveled to Palau or plans to do so in the future.
