Work This, Vol. 3: Club NRG Work Out is a taxing listen for sure. There's a good chance that those who can manage to make it through the album from beginning to end will be feeling fairly exhausted. This is manic music, the sort of music that drains the listener of energy with every passing moment. Starting things off with some Hi-NRG-style house music highlighted by Chili Hi Fly's "Is It Love?," the album then slowly moves toward equally over-exuberant progressive trance highlighted by Darude's "Sandstorm" and later comes to a sort of euphoric climax with the Sarah McLachlan-graced "Silence." In sum, this album seems interested in making listeners' heart and pulse rise, the sort of music that is intended to stimulate someone -- or, at the least, enhance the substances that are stimulating them . Either way, this isn't for the faint of heart. But those who are familiar with this sort of music probably don't need to be told that. And those who are indeed familiar with this music will also hopefully realize that this album isn't anything particularly special. In fact, it's quite generic, particularly at the time of its release in 2001 when these club anthems-type albums were monopolizing shelf space at the average suburban strip-mall record store instead of albums that actually attempt to make some sort of artistic statement. ~ Jason Birchmeier, Rovi
