Seller's Description:
Walter Tyndale. Good. A first edition of this beautifully illustrated exploration of Thomas Hardy's fictional realm of Wessex, set across the south-west of England. This work, containing Tyndale's illustrations of buildings and landscapes across the west of England, including numerous which were the inspiration behind Thomas Hardy's portrayal of Wessex. Indeed, Hardy himself offered some of these suggestions to Tyndale himself. Wessex was originally a county before 1066; Thomas Hardy used the name for his fictionalised south-western landscape of Britain. Â Illustrated by Walter Tyndale (1855-1943), a British watercolour artist best known for his landscape and street scenes. Containing seventy-five plates in colour. A first edition of this work. Bound in the publisher's original decorative cloth. A delightful account of Thomas Hardy's Wessex, and how and where it fits into the south-west of England. In the publisher's original full cloth binding. Externally a trifle worn, with loss to the head and tail of the spine as a result of bumping. Internally, generally firmly bound. Front hinge is exposed but still firm. Pages are just a touch age-toned. Good.
