Iris Origo was a beautiful writer. It is pretty hard to believe that this is written during the war with bombs dropping, escaped PoWs in the front field and Germans in the back yard! The story of her battle to look after her little group of farms in war torn Italy between 1943-45, she is sensitive to the events of the time and has real fears for herself and those in her care. This was a brave woman in uncertain time. Read it and you will understand. I read it as part of a university module but wish I had found it sooner.
