ABOUT THE AUTHOR: British journalist James Edward Preston Muddock (1843 - 1934) wrote under the pen names Joyce Emmerson Preston Muddock and Dick Donovan. He was a prolific writer of mystery and horror fiction. He was as popular as his contemporary Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, author of the Sherlock Holmes books. He was born near Southampton, England to a sea captain and travelled to India when he was 14. His appetite for adventure continued into his journalism career when he visited China, the United States, and Australia.
