Excerpt from Torontonensis, 1936, Vol. 38: The Year Book of the University of Toronto You will carry from your years spent in this University no small amount of available knowledge; Of power of discrimination between first things and those of lower place, between things that are excellent and things that are vulgar, between aims that are worthy and unselfish and aims that are selfish and mean; Of mental discipline that will enable you to see and to solve the problems Of life; and of zest to pursue and find the truth of things. Your personality has been enriched, your vision widened and your capacity to serve increased. Among your choicest possessions Will be the friendships Of college days and a love Of good literature. All that you possess Of knowledge, wisdom and character is held as a trust for the good of others and the welfare of your country. On a gateway leading into the old campus of Harvard University, as you enter you see the inscription: Enter to grow in wisdom; as you leave, the words: CO forth to serve your country and mankind These commands well express the nature and the issue Of your college life. This year we have had a visit from our new governor-general, Lord Tweedsmuir - the honored and versatile John Buchan. He spoke to us on the priceless value of Spiritual freedom - a freedom which is made possible by discipline and law. Later on and immediately before our beloved Sovereign's death, passed the poet and prophet Of Empire, Rudyard Kipling. His exhortation in the realm of conduct was two-fold (as an eminent French critic wrote of him), Play for your side and Play the game, that is, you are one Of a company to which you owe loyal help; and in rendering that help, you must be fair and upright and generous. Then fell on sleep our revered and beloved King George. Of himself he said he was but an ordinary fellow Well, this head of our Imperial family did both ordinary and extraordinary things with extraordinary faith fulness and set an example to all his subjects, his friends as he called us, challenging us to be courageous, sympathetic, devoted to duty and hard work, and to walk humbly with our God.
