Because beauty resides in the idea, and not in the substance, we find an explanation of the contradictory attitudes of people; one man will say that a face to him is beautiful, while another will flatly contradict him.-Consider too how, to one with artistic sensitiveness, beauty is being created all the time in a way that does not happen to others. If an ordinary, individual and an artist are travelling in a train, the artist, as he looks out, will see, in the rearrangement, of trees and shrubs, lines and colours of the landscape, as the train moves, picture after picture. In other words, to him the moving world is all the time composing pictures. To the great musician, melodies and symphonies are being woven, as he listens to the sounds round him; the murmur of forest leaves is beautiful to him, because it is translated in his consciousness in terms of music. So the whole universe is Brahman, as we say here. There is always an underlying Unity. When we exercise our rational nature, we find this Unity at once, and it comes from within our nature and not from without. Futhermore, when we see in that Unity the vision of Beauty, that vision does not arise from the thing itself, except by way of reflection from it. We call a thing beautiful, because the Beauty Maker is everywhere, and it is His thought reflected on to the object which then evokes in us a similar thought. Who is the Maker of Beauty is most deeply suggested by the great Sufi Poet, Jami. In solitude, where Being signless dwelt, And all the universe still dormant lay Concealed in selflessness, One Being was, Exempt from I or Thou -ness, and apart From all duality; Beauty Supreme, Unmanifest, except unto Itself...
