Seller's Description:
Not Stated. Very Good. A scarce first UK edition copy of Jim Tully's novel concerning boxing. The scarce first UK edition in the publisher's original cloth binding. Library label to the rear paste down. Jim Tully (1886-1947) was an American writer and pugilist, who is considered to be one of the founders of hard-boiled fiction. This is one of his critically and commercially successful novels concerning boxing, which draws on Tully's experiences of life on the road and the ring. The protagonist, Shane Rory, is a drifter who works his way up the heavyweight ranks. This volume is scarce in the first UK edition. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally sound, with a mark to the front board and darkening to the spine. Shelf wear to the extremities. Library label to the rear paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean except for spotting to the first and last couple of pages. Very Good.

Seller's Description:
Near Fine in Very Good jacket. First edition. [vi], 248 pp. Original tan cloth lettered in black. Near Fine with former owner's name penned on front free endpaper and rear paste down, a little dampstaining to fore edge of back board. In Very Good original, unclipped ($2.00) pictorial dust jacket, chipped at head, spine panel a bit dulled, small scratch with closed tear to middle of front panel with small tape mend to verso, lightly edge worn; presents well. Uncommon in a presentable jacket. Ex-hobo-turned-author Jim Tully (best-known for his road memoir Beggars of Life) was also an ex-boxer; this novel was inspired by his experiences in the ring. Likewise, the novel Circus Parade was inspired by his time with a circus. His time as a tree-surgeon, though, unfortunately never inspired a novel. One imagines it would have had a title like The Pruner or perhaps Climbers of Bark.
